Northfield is an OK school, it used to be great. Dr. Straw, the principal tends to rule with an Iron fist, and has taken most of the fun activities out of the school. If your child gets in trouble, she will hold it against her for the rest of your child's career at Northfield. Most of the children feel that their recess is too short, and they are not allowed to play the games they want. It is bad enough that with the construction, the playground was reduced to only half the blacktop, but to then limit the recess time and only allow certain games is not fair to the little growing bodies that need to let loose at recess. I would love to have written a rose colored review of Northfield, but the truth is my kids have been miserable there.
Northfield is overall a very good elementary school The caveat is, that experience will depend a lot on who is principal at the time. During the 5 years my kids spent there, we had a very good principal, and one who was basically the embodiment of Professor Umbridge from Harry Potter. And the latter definitely lessened the quality of experience of life at Northfield.
If you are considering moving to the Northfield district, I would consider NES to be a net plus in the decision-making process. Especially when paired with the excellent Dunloggin Middle School.
They have since changed principals again, and appear to be on a pretty strong upswing as a result.
This is an amazing elementary school but if you move to a district where your kids will go to Burleigh Manor Middle along with northfield (near Miller Branch Library), it will be 10x better.

The strengths of the school do not really depend on the whims of the current regime, however: strong parent community, good teachers, great location (so convenient if you also have kids at Dunloggin Middle School next door) and, recently, an eco-conscious remodel that even includes a roof garden.
I love northfield. This is my last year at it though. If you are looking for a school, pick Nothfield!
